KoBold Metals Harnesses Artificial Intelligence to Accelerate Critical Minerals Exploration in the DRC

KoBold Metals Deploys AI-Driven Exploration Technology Across 3,000 km² of Lithium-Rich Terrain in the DRC

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO – U.S.-backed mining technology company KoBold Metals is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to transform mineral exploration in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as it intensifies its search for lithium and other critical minerals vital to the global energy transition.

Operating from its exploration base in Manono, a region renowned for its vast lithium potential, KoBold Metals is combining advanced data analytics, machine learning models, satellite imagery, historical geological records, and field surveys to identify promising mineral deposits with greater accuracy and efficiency.

The company’s exploration teams are equipped with high-precision GPS devices and AI-powered digital tools that analyze geological data in real time.

Rather than relying solely on conventional exploration techniques, KoBold uses predictive models to pinpoint areas with the highest probability of containing commercially viable mineral resources.

Founded in 2018 and backed by prominent investors including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, the California-based company aims to modernize mineral discovery and reduce the cost and time required to locate critical metals needed for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy technologies.

According to Benjamin Katabuka, Managing Director of KoBold Metals in the DRC, the company has already achieved encouraging results from its exploration programs, although detailed findings have not yet been disclosed.

The company remains in the exploration stage and expects several years of further evaluation before any potential mining operations can begin.

Since 2025, KoBold Metals has secured 14 exploration permits covering more than 3,000 square kilometres across the DRC.

The company plans to invest over US$50 million in exploration activities by early 2027, underscoring its long-term commitment to the country’s mining sector.

Field teams currently collect thousands of soil samples each week, using AI algorithms to identify geochemical indicators associated with lithium-bearing pegmatites.

The resulting data enables geologists to optimize drilling campaigns and focus resources on the most prospective targets.

KoBold’s expansion comes as global competition for critical minerals intensifies. The DRC remains the world’s largest producer of cobalt and one of the leading copper producers, making it a strategic destination for companies seeking resources essential for battery manufacturing and clean energy supply chains.

The company’s growing presence also aligns with broader efforts by the United States to expand its footprint in Africa’s critical minerals sector, an industry long dominated by Chinese investment and mining interests.

While the adoption of AI-driven exploration is attracting significant attention from investors and policymakers, local stakeholders continue to emphasize the importance of ensuring that new mining investments contribute to infrastructure development, employment opportunities, skills transfer, and broader economic benefits for Congolese communities.

As exploration advances, KoBold Metals’ technology-led approach could provide a glimpse into the future of mining discovery in Africa, where artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to unlock new mineral resources and support the continent’s role in the global energy transition.
